Chiefs insider implies Justin Fields is in danger of getting passed up on QB depth chart

The Kansas City Chiefs will be ready to make some noise during the 2026 season. QB Patrick Mahomes just got another contract extension and should be ready to return from injury sooner rather than later. But a different Chiefs quarterback may already be in danger of not making the final roster.

The Athletic’s Jesse Newell answered questions from his mailbag in a recent article with training jump a little over a month away.

“But honestly … Fields’ passing hasn’t been great so far. During earlier practices in particular, Fields sailed quite a few throws, though he seemed to settle down a bit in later workouts,” Newell wrote. “It’s still very early, but to this point, seventh-round rookie Garrett Nussmeier has been a better and more accurate passer in drills — to my untrained eye — than Fields.”

Kansas City acquired Fields in a trade with New York earlier this offseason. That acquisition appeared at the time to be a hedge, giving the Chiefs an option at quarterback in case Mahomes misses any time to start the season.

However, now that Mahomes could be ready for Week 1, Fields finds himself in a precarious situation. Especially because of his poor performance during minicamp.

Newell did point out that Fields’ greatest strengths, his speed and athleticism, cannot show up this early in the offseason by design. After all, practices are still non-contact at this point.

Still, Newell acknowledged that Fields need to play a lot better in training camp to secure his spot on the roster.

“That doesn’t mean Fields won’t be better in training camp, and it certainly doesn’t mean that Fields can’t be a better overall player once he’s allowed to show off all he can do in full-contact settings,” Newell added.

Fields will certainly be under a lot of pressure during training camp. It will be fascinating to see whether or not he rises to the occasion.
