Fernando Mendoza struggles during rough Sunday Raiders training camp practice

The Las Vegas Raiders hope for a strong rookie season from their young quarterback, Fernando Mendoza. Mendoza comes to the NFL with high expectations, as he was selected no. 1 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft. The young play caller struggled though on Sunday, during a training camp practice.

“Fernando Mendoza less clean, under threw Malik Benson on a play and was picked off by Greedy Vance in 7on7,” The Athletic reported.

At least one other Raiders quarterback seemed to do much better.

“Kirk Cousins had big plays to Brock Bowers in team yet again,” the outlet added.

Mendoza is clearly still a work in progress, as he was playing in college just months ago. The rookie play caller does have the respect of his head coach, Klint Kubiak, as he learns the playbook.

“I love the mindset that he has,” Kubiak said about Mendoza, per Silver and Black Pride. “That’s what all of our players should have. Nobody has arrived, especially a rookie quarterback. So, you just keep giving them a new rep every day, and coach from it, and go back the next day, solve the problem, and go to work and fix a new problem. He’s just like everybody else that’s got to earn their way.”

This offseason, Mendoza has appeared willing to learn. He is on record saying he wouldn’t have a problem if he started the season as backup to Cousins.

“Whatever decisions are made at the end, that’s fantastic — and I’m well for it,” Mendoza said, per ESPN. “I just want the team to win, so that’s where I’m at.”

The Raiders have struggled for a good while as an organization, going back to their days in Oakland. Kubiak takes over this upcoming season, after Pete Carroll was fired. Carroll went just 3-14 in one season as the Las Vegas head coach.
