MLB rumors: Yankees, Red Sox won’t love ‘heavy favorite’ to make Luis Arraez trade with Giants
The San Francisco Giants are well outside of a playoff spot and will be selling at the MLB Trade Deadline. There are multiple teams asking about pitcher Logan Webb. Meanwhile, Luis Arraez could also be one of the players on the move, with the Tampa Bay Rays, New York Yankees, and Boston Red Sox all interested in his services.
Now, there has been an update on who could land Arraez from the Giants, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
“The Tampa Bay Rays are the heavy favorite to acquire three-time batting champion Luis Arraez from the Giants,” Nightengale wrote.
With all three teams aiming to land Arraez, his going to the Rays would be a massive blow to the Yankees and Red Sox. The Rays are currently leading the AL East, sitting at 65-45. They have a 3.5-game lead over the New York Yankees, who are 62-49. Meanwhile, the Rays are six games ahead of the Boston Red Sox, who are 59-51. Both the Yankees and Red Sox are well in control of a wild-card spot in the American League.
The Rays have Taylor Walls at shortstop currently, who has played 89 games and is hitting just .212. The Yankees have primarily used Jose Caballero, who is hitting .240, but he has also played third with Anthony Volpe at short. Volpe has struggled, with just 19 RBIs in 56 games. The Red Sox have primarily played Andruw Monasterio at short, with a .259 batting average. Meanwhile, Trevor Story is hitting just .206 in 41 games.
The MLB Trade Deadline is on Monday at 6 pm ET.
