MLB rumors: The next trade Tigers could make after dealing Tarik Skubal to Dodgers

The Detroit Tigers traded star pitcher Tarik Skubal on Saturday, to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Now Detroit could be parting ways with another pitcher, ahead of the Major League Baseball trade deadline on Monday.

“The Arizona Diamondbacks, who suddenly have surged into the No. 2 wild-card spot after winning 13 of 18 games since July 9, would love to have Washington Nationals first baseman Luis Garcia or Detroit Tigers starter Casey Mize by the end of Monday,” USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported on Sunday.

The Tigers have had a disappointing season. Detroit is just 53-58 on the campaign, and fourth in the American League Central.

This season, Mize has posted a 2.70 ERA in 16 starts. He also has four victories on the year, while posting a 0.99 WHIP.

Arizona is currently 59-52 on the season, and second in the National League West.

Tarik Skubal was emotional after Tigers trade

Tigers fans were hurting to hear that the team has dealt Skubal. Skubal won back-to-back American League Cy Young awards, in 2024 and 2025.

Even though an injury forced him to miss a lot of time in 2026, Skubal was still dominant on the mound. He has a 2.79 ERA on the campaign.

Skubal took a moment to reflect Saturday night on his time with the organization. He fought back tears.

“I’m very appreciative of all the things the Tigers did for me,” Skubal said, per ESPN. “Drafting me in 2018, giving a kid a chance out of a small school and giving me every resource to use. Everything has always been at my disposal. They’ve always had answers and a plan for me, so yeah — I feel like I’ve experienced a lot and gone through a lot of failure early in my career, and this club never stopped believing in me. They kept throwing me back out there every fifth day when I probably didn’t deserve it. That’s something I’ll never take for granted.”

Detroit is in action on Sunday against the Athletics. The Tigers have won six of their last 10 games.
