Charlie Coyle’s immediate reaction to signing 6-year contract extension with Blue Jackets
Charlie Coyle is fresh off one of the best seasons of his National Hockey League career — and he was rewarded for it on Tuesday, signing a six-year, $36 million contract extension with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The 34-year-old will now be making $6 million per year until his age-40 campaign.
“I love playing here,” Coyle said on Tuesday, per NHL.com. “Having (coach) Rick Bowness back, that adds to it too. Didn’t know much about him before this year. Had him for a half a year, and I love what he brought. Loved his energy and I love what he’s done in just a half year.
“He was here with limited opportunity to fully do what he does, so I’m pretty pumped to see what a full year of ‘Bones’ will do for us and I want to keep playing for a guy like that. But yeah, the underlying thing is this is a place that we can win, and I see that potential and I didn’t want to leave that.”
Coyle was one of the key reasons the Blue Jackets hung around a postseason berth throughout the 2025-26 season. He scored 20 goals and added 38 assists over a full 82-game slate, while being the first forward over the boards on both the powerplay and penalty kill.
He made a significant difference at both ends of the rink, and finished with the second highest points total of his career. He scored 60 points with the Boston Bruins in 2023-24.
“I’ve seen what we have,” Coyle continued. “I’ve seen our potential and I’m excited for it and it’s something I want to be here for and work towards and the team we have, the depth we have, it’s something that excites me and something that I want to be a part of going forward, and something that we can build because it’s there. I know it’s there.”
Columbus occupied a playoff berth for most of the season before a brutal collapse; the Jackets lost nine of their last 11 games.
Still, the roster is young and skilled, and should be competing for a spot in the dance again in 2026-27. And Coyle will be a key piece of that as he tries to help the franchise return to legitimate Stanley Cup contention in the years to come.
