Caitlin Clark refuses to blame refs after foul trouble sparks shocking dud vs. Fire
Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark played her first game against the Portland Fire on Saturday. It was an all around rough outing for Clark and the Fever, resulting in a 100-84 loss. Clark is taking full responsibility for one aspect of the game that got out of control quickly.
Clark did not blame the referees after Saturday’s ugly defeat. She made it clear that she simply needs to play better in the future.
“Officiating wasn’t our problem tonight,” Clark said after the loss, per Marca.com. “It’s hard when you foul, and I just need to do a better job being straight up, keeping the defender in front of me. Definitely some tough ones, but this is basketball, which is a game. Learn from it, watch the film, and come back next time and be ready to go.”
Clark started the game off hot, helping Indiana jump out to a 8-4 lead early in the contest. Unfortunately, that all changed over the next dozen or so minutes of game time.
Clark finished the first half with three fouls with the Fever already trailing by 13 points. She then picked up her fourth and fifth fouls during the third quarter.
Head coach Stephanie White decided to bench Clark after picking up her fifth foul with just under a minute left in the quarter.
Portland completely shut Clark down, limiting her to just six points on the night. It was her worst performance of the season, even excluding her foul trouble.
Indiana is now back to .500 with a 4-4 record on the season. Hopefully Clark and the Fever can move past this lost quickly and get ready for their next opponent.
Next up for the Fever is a huge game against the Dream on June 4th. That game tips off at 7PM ET at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
