Bulls coach Tiago Splitter sends stern warning to Noa Essengue with Summer League benching

The Chicago Bulls continued their winless start to NBA Summer League on Monday with an 80-63 loss to the Utah Jazz, but the biggest takeaway came after head coach Tiago Splitter explained why he benched Noa Essengue to begin the second half.

K.C. Johnson of Chicago Sports Network reported on X, formerly known as Twitter, that Splitter wanted more from the former first-round pick on both ends of the floor.

“Noa Essengue said Tiago Splitter told him that he didn’t start second half because Splitter wanted more energy from him offensively and defensively and more leadership.

Splitter said he ‘wanted more’ from Essengue and also wanted an extra ball handler in lineup.”

Essengue, the No. 12 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, finished with six points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks while shooting 1-for-4 from the field and 2-for-3 from the free-throw line in 18 minutes.

Noa Essengue challenged as Caleb Wilson continues to shine

Essengue’s benching also came as rookie Caleb Wilson continued to impress in Las Vegas. The No. 4 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft finished with 19 points, eight rebounds, five blocks, two assists and two steals while shooting 8-for-17 from the field and 3-for-8 from 3-point range across 29 minutes.

While Wilson has quickly emerged as one of the Bulls’ brightest Summer League performers, Splitter’s decision to bench Essengue highlighted the standard he expects from every young player as Chicago evaluates its future core.

The loss also underscored the competitive environment Splitter is trying to establish during his first offseason with the franchise. Summer League serves as an opportunity for young players to earn roles, and the coach’s message made clear that energy, leadership and consistency will be expected regardless of draft status.

Chicago will have little time to regroup. The Bulls are set to face the Washington Wizards on Tuesday night in a matchup featuring 2026 No. 1 overall pick AJ Dybantsa. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on Prime Video.

After opening Summer League with consecutive losses, Chicago will look to get back on track while Wilson attempts to build on his impressive start and Essengue looks to respond to Splitter’s public challenge.
