Edward Cabrera’s expected role once he returns to Cubs

After being out with a blister on his middle finger, Chicago Cubs pitcher Edward Cabrera is coming back.

On Saturday, Cabrera will make his official comeback in the bullpen against the Cincinatti Reds at Wrigley Field, per Bruce Levine of MLB.com. Additionally, the possible return of left-handed pitcher Hoby Milner is on the horizon, according to Cubs’ manager Craig Counsell.

On Aug.17, Cabrera was placed on the 15-day injured list following his last start against the St. Louis Cardinals. The day before, he threw for 3.2 innings, gave up six hits, seven earned runs, and struck out two. In the end, the Cubs lost to the Cardinals 11-4.

Cabrera has a record of 5-5 with a 5.68 ERA and 67 strikeouts.

He missed nearly two months of the season due to a left hamstring and adductor strain sustained on June 23. Cabrera injured his leg while covering first base during a game against the New York Mets.

Altogether, Cabrera has been in MLB since 2021. He pitched for the Miami Marlins from 2021 to 2025 before being traded to the Cubs in January.

He has a 30-34 record, 4.31 ERA, and 545 strikeouts.

The Cubs are in the midst of a tight playoff race. Currently, they are 76-58 and are trailing the Milwaukee Brewers by seven games in the National League Central Division. Meanwhile, they are leading the Philadelphia Phillies by two games in the National League Wild Card standings.

The Cubs are coming off losing two out of three to the Arizona Diamondbacks. They will play a three-game series against the Reds at Wrigley Field beginning on Friday. on
