Bob Nightengale calls out Giants’ Tony Vitello for wasting Bryce Eldridge as season slips away

The San Francisco Giants have endured a challenging season. They are searching for answers at the moment. The Giants recently promoted star prospect Bryce Eldridge, but the infielder has surprisingly not received consistent playing time. MLB insider Bob Nightengale recently wrote a story for USA Today and questioned manager Tony Vitello and the Giants for their strategy.

“It’s the San Francisco Giants calling up their No. 1 prospect, one of the prized young sluggers in baseball, only to let him rot on the bench. The Giants, who promoted first baseman Bryce Eldridge two weeks ago from Triple-A Sacramento, are utilizing their batboys more frequently than Eldridge,” Nightengale wrote.

Nightingale shared a quote from Vitello, with the manager explaining that having a player who is willing to do whatever is asked of him makes things “easier.”

“Easy for who? It’s not Vitello’s development that’s being stymied, it’s Eldridge’s career,” Nightingale wrote about Vitello’s comment.

It is an intriguing situation. Vitello may end up being asked about Nightengale’s story at some point.

Overall, Eldridge has appeared in nine games so far with San Francisco. The Giants prospect is hitting .143/.226/.250 across nine games played. He has recorded one home run as well.
