The San Antonio Spurs struck first, stealing Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder, and it was star big man Victor Wembanyama who led the way with a dominating performance.

In fact, following the Spurs’ Game 1 win, NBA media personality Bill Simmons stopped just short of essentially saying that Victor Wembanyama is on his way to being the league’s GOAT with a big Tiger Woods comparison.

“The UFO has landed, Wemby has emerged from the UFO … he’s here to dominate the league. I had a Tiger in ‘97 Augusta kind of feeling watching the game, like something was changing for real. The sport was being upended in a real way,” Simmons said. “Win or lose the series, it doesn’t matter. He was doing something last night where I just felt like the sport had shifted.

“He took out SGA, SGA was a mess. He completely took out Chet to the point that it was almost debatable whether he should be out there. He took out Hartenstein, they had to take out two minutes into the game. He changed 50 shots … did this all on the road, did this with the f**k you energy from the MVP, not getting that, and just backed it up in all these different ways.”

Wembanyama finished Game 1 with 41 points, 24 rebounds, three assists, one steal and one blocked shot in 49 minutes. He shot 14-of-25 from the field, 1-of-2 from the 3-point line and 12-of-13 from the free-throw line. And his biggest 3-point shot came late in the first overtime period from near the logo that tied the game and helped force a second overtime period.
