Giants’ John Harbaugh expecting Najee Harris to be ready ‘just in time’ after late signing
In an effort to boost their running back room, the New York Giants signed free agent Najee Harris. Head coach John Harbaugh is expecting him to be ready to compete sooner rather than later.
Getting a late start to training camp, it’ll take some time for Harris to truly ramp up. But Harbaugh doesn’t think it’s out of the realm of possibilities that he’s ready for Week 1, via Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News.
“2-3 weeks. Just in time, probably,” Harbaugh said.
Harris appeared in just three games during the 2025 season with the Los Angeles Chargers due to an Achilles injury. While he seems fully cleared now, the running back will still be entering 2026 with a chip on his shoulder. If he’s eligible to play Week 1, he’ll have more opportunities to prove he can still be an impactful force.
Prior to that season with the Chargers, Harris spent the first four years of his NFL career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was named a Pro Bowler as a rookie, ultimately running for 4,312 yards and 28 touchdowns. Harris had at least 1,000 yards and six touchdowns in each of the four seasons.
Now in New York, Harris will be fighting for opportunities in a running back room led by Cam Skattebo. Coming off of a serious injury himself, the Giants want as many strong options as possible. Devin Singletary and Tyrone Tracy should be battling for touches as well.
How big of role Harris will have with the Giants is yet to be seen. But if he’s able to get into playing shape quickly, it should only increase.
