49ers’ Trent Williams gets 100% real on retirement plans after current contract
As the San Francisco 49ers gear up for what they hope will be a Super Bowl-contending 2026 campaign, one of the franchise’s most important pillars is beginning to think about life after football. Future Hall of Fame left tackle Trent Williams recently acknowledged that the two-year, $50 million extension keeping him under contract through 2027 will “probably” be his last NFL deal.
The 37-year-old remains one of the league’s elite offensive linemen. However, he admitted the decision of when to retire is becoming increasingly real. Speaking candidly about his future, Williams described the prospect as “scary.” He explained that he is torn between playing until his body tells him to stop and walking away while he can still perform at an elite level. More than wear and tear, however, family has become the driving force behind his retirement considerations.
Williams noted that his oldest daughter was born shortly before he entered the NFL. With her approaching adulthood and college on the horizon, he wants to be more present in her life.
“I want to be there and be accessible,” Williams said. He emphasized his desire to prioritize fatherhood after nearly two decades of NFL commitments.
Despite those long-term plans, Williams made it clear that his focus remains firmly on the upcoming season. He continues protecting quarterback Brock Purdy and helping San Francisco chase another Lombardi Trophy.
Williams, of course, is widely regarded as one of the greatest offensive tackles the game has ever seen. He has assembled a résumé worthy of first-ballot Hall of Fame recognition. Drafted fourth overall in 2010, he established himself as a premier blindside protector. Nicknamed “Silverback,” he earned three straight First-Team All-Pro honors from 2021 to 2023. He also helped lead San Francisco to a Super Bowl appearance.
