Jayden Daniels gushes about ‘special bond’ with Commanders OC David Blough

The Washington Commanders are ready for a comeback tour during the 2026 season. Washington went 5-12 in 2025 after making it to the NFC Championship the year before. Perhaps one tweak to their coaching staff will make all the difference in unlocking their offense this fall.

Commanders QB Jayden Daniels spoke about the special bond he has with his new offensive coordinator David Blough.

“Oh, it’s been great. That’s my guy,” Daniels said about Blough on Wednesday, per SiriusXM Radio. “Yeah we sit there, we talk all the time. He’ll text me at, you know, 4 or 5AM and he got a thought at 3 o’clock in the morning on how he wants a play ran.”

Blough was the assistant quarterbacks coach in Washington during the 2025 season. Washington promoted Blough to offensive coordinator in January after firing Kliff Kingsbury. The Commanders felt some pressure to promote Blough because he was receiving interest from other teams, namely the Lions.

Daniels explained that one reason why the pair are so close is because they have the same tenure in their respective roles.

“So, you know, it’s a special bond because we both, he started his coaching career in my rookie year. He was a rookie coach and I was a rookie quarterback,” Daniels added. “To see his growth over these past three years to get to this point man, I’m super excited. Especially to have him as my offensive coordinator, be the quarterback, and have the offense built around both of us.”

Blough is following a similar path to Saints head coach Kellen Moore. Both were NFL quarterbacks who quickly pivoted into coaching instead of playing. It certainly worked out well for Moore, and Commanders fans have to be hopeful that Blough will follow the same trajectory.

It will be exciting to see how Washington’s offense looks in Blough’s scheme this season.

The Commanders begin the regular season with a road game against the Eagles. That NFC East contest kicks off at 4:25PM ET on September 13th.
