Yankees’ Trent Grisham gets honest about potentially serious injury

The New York Yankees added another concern to an already active injury situation Wednesday night. Center fielder Trent Grisham exited during a 2-1 loss against the Toronto Blue Jays because of left knee discomfort.

The 29-year-old outfielder sustained the issue during the second inning after legging out a bloop double that dropped between Toronto defenders Yohendrick Pinango and Kazuma Okamoto. Grisham reached second base but appeared uncomfortable afterward and was seen checking his knee. Post-game, Grisham claimed that he was ‘optimistic’ it was not a serious injury, going at length over its extent, per a post on X by Yankees Videos.

“Felt weird in my knee for a little bit. It didn’t feel like something I should mess with,” he explained.

The injury sequence developed during Grisham’s first plate appearance of the night. Despite staying in defensively through the fourth inning, the Yankees ultimately decided not to push the situation further.

Grisham’s injury arrives during a difficult offensive stretch. After securing the Yankees’ starting center field role last season and producing a breakout 2025 campaign that included 34 home runs, 74 RBIs and an .812 OPS over 143 games, his 2026 production has declined substantially.

Through 49 games entering Wednesday, Grisham carried a .174 batting average with six home runs, 27 RBIs and a .653 OPS. The Yankees nevertheless showed offseason confidence in him by extending a $22.025 million qualifying offer, which he accepted.

Wednesday’s game itself developed into a pitching showcase between rookie starters Trey Yesavage and Cam Schlittler following a rain delay that lasted more than two hours. Yesavage threw six shutout innings with eight strikeouts while holding the Yankees to just two hits.

Aaron Judge went 0-for-4 and struck out four times as Toronto’s pitching staff controlled New York’s lineup. The Blue Jays broke through in the seventh after loading the bases.

Andrés Giménez worked an 11-pitch bases-loaded walk to bring home the first run, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. added a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. The Yankees scored once in the ninth on Paul Goldschmidt’s RBI groundout, but Toronto closer Louis Varland shut the door for the 2-1 win.
