Yankees rumors: Spencer Jones mentioned as trade candidate after MLB promotion

Things went slowly for New York Yankees outfielder Spencer Jones in his first try. But Aaron Judge’s injury gave him another chance. However, Jones has been mentioned as a trade candidate after his big-league promotion, according to MLB.com.

“There’s some question about how seriously the Yankees view Jones as part of their future,” Bryan Hoch wrote. “His power and speed combo would make him an appealing centerpiece if the Yankees seek to address needs this summer — particularly if they can trade for a starting catcher.”

Jones has totaled 13 homers in 43 games at Triple-A so far this season. That’s probably enough for other teams to covet his over-the-fence stroke.

However, he hasn’t done a lot at the big-league level. Heading into Monday’s game, Jones had a .250 batting average with zero homers and three RBIs in 28 at-bats. He also had a disturbing 13 strikeouts and an ugly .286 slugging percentage.

Still, he might be wearing a Tigers uniform later this summer, according to ESPN.

It should be noted that this would be a huge price to pay, even for Tarik Skubal. The Yankees would send Jones along with RHP Carlos Lagrange or RHP Elmer Rodriguez to the Tigers.

“How can any potential major trade not include Yankees rumors?” Eric Karabell wrote. “They last won the World Series in — checks notes — 2009. Of course, they would want one of the top pitchers in the world even if their rotation appears to be one of the best already. Skubal would make it better.

“Any debate must start with the slugging, strikeout-prone Jones, whom the Yankees might not have the patience to wait for, or perhaps OF Jasson Dominguez. One must go. What about one of the organization’s top pitching prospects in Lagrange or Rodriguez? That is a lot, but then again, so is Skubal.”

The Yankees are in the thick of the hunt for the AL East title. They’re also among the favorites to reach the World Series. But they might have to trade Jones to get the extra piece they need to get over the top.
