Yankees’ Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon both getting lit up at same time in rehab starts is ominous

The New York Yankees have dealt with some injuries to their bullpen, and the good news is that they should be getting reinforcements back soon. The bad news is that those reinforcements didn’t perform well in their latest rehab start.

Carlos Rodon and Gerrit Cole both allowed six runs each in their Triple-A starts. Rodon played his third minor league rehabilitation start for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

“Rodon allowed a two-run homer to Mickey Gasper on his changeup in the first inning and a solo homer to Kristian Campbell on a slider in the sixth in a 7-6 loss at Worcester,” the AP wrote. “He threw 83 pitches, struck out four, walked two and has a 7.11 ERA in his three starts at Triple-A.”

Rodon is supposed to make his major league debut during the weekend, according to manager Aaron Boone. He started the season on the 15-day injured list as he was recovering from surgery to remove loose bodies in his left elbow and shave a bone spur.

As for Cole, he made his fourth minor league start for High-A Hudson Valley as he returns from reconstructive elbow surgery.

“Cole allowed six runs and seven hits in 4⅓ innings while throwing 69 pitches against Winston-Salem. Cole allowed solo homers to Caleb Bonemer and Kyle Lodise while also getting four strikeouts,” the AP wrote.

Cole will make a few more appearances in Triple-A before making his season debut. The last time that Cole was on the field for the Yankees was Game 5 of the 2024 World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

It looks like Cole and Rondon need some more time before coming to the majors, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Yankees were patient with them.
