Eagles’ AJ Epenesa takes dig at Browns after ‘weird’ free agency fail

When news broke that AJ Epenesa wasn’t going to play for the Cleveland Browns in 2026 after signing a contract with the team back in March, it turned heads around the NFL.

Now granted, things worked out just fine for Epenesa; he landed a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles and will get to compete for a Super Bowl as part of a quality defensive line with Jonathan Greenard, Jalyx Hunt, and Nolan Smith, and the Browns. But one question has remained: what happened in Cleveland?

Well, at Eagles camp on Tuesday, The Athletic’s Zach Berman took it upon himself to ask just that, with Epenesa noting things were “weird” before opting to focus on his future in South Philadelphia instead.

“Cleveland, it was a weird situation. I don’t necessarily want to go back and talk on that,” Epenesa told Berman. “I’ll just leave that in the past and be happy that I’m not a Brown and I’m an Eagle.”

Widely considered one of the best edge rushers in the 2020 class, Epenesa fell to the second round after running a brutal 5.04 40, being selected by the Buffalo Bills 54th overall. After spending six years in New York, Epenesa signed a one-year, $5 million deal with the team across Lake Erie back in May, but it was ultimately voided 11 days later. After taking some time to weigh his options, Epenesa signed with the Eagles in June, and now, that whole “weird” chapter is in the past, with the Iowa product instead focusing on putting in work to help his next shot at free agency in 2027.
