Where Drake Maye ranks in The Athletic’s QB tiers after Super Bowl run

After leading the New England Patriots to a Super Bowl, The Athletic has put Drake Maye into perspective ahead of the season. The Athletic released its annual quarterback tiers, which feature several of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.

Maye’s Super Bowl run puts him amongst the best in the league, as he’s considered a Tier 2 quarterback. He finds himself alongside two-time MVP Lamar Jackson, Super Bowl-winning Seahawks quarterback Sam Donald, and young stars C.J. Stroud and Caleb Williams in what the publication describes as the largest Tier 2 in history. Maye moved up in their tiers as to start the 2025 season, he was ranked in their tier three.

Maye received great compliments for his skills from the anonymous coaches and front office executives that spoke about him.

“The kid throws a really good go-ball, which will pair well with A.J. Brown,” said an defensive coach who spoke with The Athletic. “Maybe it’s his youth, but I think Josh McDaniels does a phenomenal job of packaging things within a game plan to take some of the pressure off of Drake. He can do what they want him to do offensively, but at the same time, how much are they really asking him to do?”

Meanwhile, an unnamed executive also gave him high praise, saying, “I see him as a high 2 on his way to a 1. You just have to see it against a harder schedule. And then I think he did get hurt in the AFC Championship Game, he was playing hurt in the Super Bowl. But to me, he’d be right at that Tier 1 border.”

In 17 games last season, Maye threw for 4,394 passing yards and 31 touchdowns with eight interceptions, with a 72% completion rate. He finished the postseason throwing for 828 yards and six touchdowns and four interceptions.
