Red Sox DFA pitcher immediately after trade deadline

The Boston Red Sox stayed active leading up until the trade deadline in an effort to bolster their playoff push. They were then forced to shake up their roster to accommodate their new additions.

The Red Sox have designated relief pitcher Ryan Watson for assignment, via Chris Cotillo of MassLive. His roster spot is being taken by Erik Miller, who was acquired in a trade with the San Francisco Giants.

Heading into Tuesday, Boston holds a four game advantage over the competition in the Wild Card race and sits just 5.5 games back of the AL East lead with their 60-51 record. Thanks in large part due to their 15-game winning streak, the Red Sox entered the deadline as clear buyers. The franchise took numerous gambles to try and improve their current product.

Boston’s crown jewel was new catcher Adley Rutschman. The team was willing to part with numerous top prospects to acquire his services. But they now expect the three-time All-Star to be behind the plate for the foreseeable future.

Acquiring a relief pitcher in Miller may not create as much buzz. But the fact the Red Sox gave up former top prospect Marcelo Mayer to do so certainly turned heads. Miller holds an impressive 2.76 ERA and 45/22 K/BB ratio over his 38 outings. But Mayer was once the top prospect in the entire organization.

Craig Breslow and company were willing to take the gamble. The Red Sox now believe they’re ready to truly go on a deep playoff run. It’s now up to Miller and the entire roster to prove Boston’s belief correct.
