Fantasy football managers will take note of insider’s surprise ‘WR2’ Commanders declaration

Maybe the Washington Commanders can sign Stefon Diggs. Or maybe a young player steps up big time. But if neither of those happens, fantasy football managers will take note of an insider’s surprise WR2 declaration.

The surprise is the No. 2 guy may not even be a receiver for head coach Dan Quinn, according to ESPN.

“Chig Okonkwo is a tight end, but I would classify him as the de facto WR2 behind Terry McLaurin,” Jeremy Fowler wrote. “The Commanders have questions at receiver opposite McLaurin, so Okonkwo can fill some of that void in the short term. Okonkwo is versatile enough to move around the formation.”

Commanders might get creative with TE Chig Okonkwo

That’s quite an announcement for fantasy leagues. Having a tight end who gets wide receiver attention from the offense is quite a bonus. Okonkwo has some wide receiver skills, said Commanders WR1 Terry McLaurin.

“He’s a tight end who really runs routes like a receiver,” McLaurin told me about Okonkwo.

Also, there seems to be a quickly growing chemistry between Daniels and Okonkwo. Maybe Daniels will use Okonkwo in the red zone like he did his rookie season with Zach Ertz.

Okonkwo seems to like the added responsibilities.

“Having an expanded playbook, it’s allowing me to use my speed down the field a lot more,” Okonkwo said.

However, don’t expect Okonkwo to forget his tight end status. He said the Commanders have a tight-knit group, according to a post on X by the Commanders via commanderswire.com.

“In the tight end room, we’re all super close,” Okonkwo said. “I feel like tight end is a very selfless position, so we’re all rooting for each other all the time. We all want each other to do well, and we all know that we help each other. In different blocks, in different combos.

“And it’s the same thing with the team. We’re all a connected team; we’re all a connected unit. We all know that we help each other by doing our job correctly.”
