Fever suffer season-ending injury blow

The Indiana Fever have regrouped in a big way since getting off to an inconsistent start to the season. They are currently 19-11 and have won seven of their last 10 games with both Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell making a case for MVP. But the Fever received a major blow on Tuesday with the announcement that backup center Damiris Dantas will miss the rest of the season due to injury, as per Tony East of The IX Sports.

Damiris Dantas suffered a meniscus injury and underwent surgery this week, putting out of the lineup for the Fever for the remainder of the season. In her absence, the Fever have both Myisha Hines-Allen and Makayla Timpson who can both play minutes at center, as well as rookie Michelle Onyiah who is limited though on a development contract.

Fever head coach Stephanie White acknowledged that the decision was a last resort after exhausting all other options, as per East.

“The first part of the process is just rehab, to see if you can minimize symptoms and get stronger and eliminate some of the effects,” White said. “When you go through rehab and you don’t get the desired effects, then you take the next step. The next step was the surgery consultation and ultimately the surgery.”

The Brazilian native had re-signed with the Fever as a free agent this past offseason, and was in her third season overall with the organization. Prior to the injury, she had appeared in only 12 games at a little over eight minutes per game. She was averaging career-lows of 3.3 points and 1.5 rebounds with splits of 40.6 percent shooting from the field, 35 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 77.8 percent shooting from the free-throw line.
