Red Sox sold way too soon on Marcelo Mayer at the trade deadline. Here’s why

The Boston Red Sox have been one of baseball’s most interesting stories this season. Following an extremely difficult start to the year, Boston has emerged as a legitimate contender in the American League over the past couple of months. The ball club was able to buy at the trade deadline given their encouraging performance. Acquiring catcher Adley Rutschman was their biggest move. However, the Red Sox ended up trading infielder Marcelo Mayer away in a deal with the San Francisco Giants for reliever Erik Miller.

The trade was surprising in all reality. Red Sox fans may not be too concerned about the team moving on from a guy who has hit just .223 with a .625 OPS through his first 114 games played at the big league level. However, those 114 games represent the issue with the Red Sox’s decision — Boston moved on from Mayer way too soon.

Did Red Sox make a mistake?

Mayer was selected by the Red Sox with the fourth overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft. There was a belief around the baseball world that Mayer could have been a top three selection that season. The fact that he fell to Boston at No. 4 overall excited the fanbase.

Mayer made his MLB debut in 2025 and hit just .228 across 44 games played. So far in 2026, the versatile infielder has recorded a .220 batting average in 70 contests.

His numbers aren’t great. Yet, Mayer is only 23 years old. Moving on from such a young player who still features a high ceiling is surprising. The move clearly suggests that the Red Sox are all in on this season. The American League is weak right now and Boston clearly wants to make a deep postseason push.

It’s a respectable strategy at the moment, but the Mayer decision is risky nonetheless. He could figure things out in San Francisco and reach his All-Star potential. If that happens — and the Red Sox don’t win the World Series any time soon — this trade could prove to be a massive failure for Boston.
