Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes looking ‘pretty damn good’ only ramps up Week 1 injury return hype

The Kansas City Chiefs hope to return to the Super Bowl in 2026, following a disappointing 2025 season. Kansas City knows in order to do that, they need a healthy Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes appears to be doing better after suffering a bad knee injury last season.

“The answer is pretty damn good when I was watching him. He’s got a bulky knee brace on his left leg that he fidgets with between plays, but he was taking all of the first-team reps and making incredible throws. He also was testing the knee a bit by rolling to his left and throwing off that leg,” ESPN reported from Chiefs training camp.

Mahomes’ teammates are excited for his return this upcoming season. The Chiefs’ Super Bowl-winning quarterback tore his ACL in 2025.

“He looks like Pat Mahomes,” Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones said. “It doesn’t look like anything’s changed. He’s jumping around, being Pat. We’ve just got to get it going.”

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is monitoring his quarterback’s health at camp. He said he doesn’t want to push his quarterback too hard.

“He’s really doing everything that he normally does, and doing it well,” Reid said. “We’re just keeping an eye on him and letting the doctors guide us from there. As long as he’s safe, that’s what we’re looking at. So right now, for what we’re doing, he’s safe to roll.”

Mahomes had 3,587 passing yards during last season, before getting hurt. He had thrown 22 touchdowns, and posted a completion percentage at 62.7 percent.

During the 2025 NFL season, the Chiefs missed the playoffs. Kansas City posted a 6-11 record. Kansas City’s first NFL preseason game is on August 15, against the Los Angeles Rams.
