BCB dismisses reports of Sharfuddoula Saikat's contract termination

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has issued a formal clarification stating that umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid Saikat's association with the board concluded naturally when his extended contract lapsed in April 2026. The BCB was clear that no termination took place and that the board simply chose not to pursue a further renewal once that term ended.

The clarification was issued on August 4, 2026, after several media reports characterised the development as a contract termination. The BCB acknowledged those reports may have created confusion about Sharfuddoula's standing. His original contract with the board had expired in December 2025 and was subsequently extended until April 2026, at which point no additional extension was sought.

"The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has taken note of recent media reports concerning International Cricket Council (ICC) Elite Panel Umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid Saikat’s engagement with the Board, which may have caused some confusion or misunderstanding about his current status," the BCB statement read as quoted by Cricbuzz.

Why did BCB decide against renewing Sharfuddoula's contract beyond April 2026?

The board attributed the decision directly to Sharfuddoula's expanding workload on the international circuit. As an ICC Elite Panel umpire, his officiating schedule had grown considerably, and the BCB reasoned that those commitments could limit the contribution he was able to make within the board's own programmes.

"Sharfuddoula was under contract with the Board as a BCB Umpire. His contract expired in December 2025 and was subsequently extended until April 2026. Following the completion of the extended term, no further extension of the contract was pursued taking into account Sharfuddoula’s growing responsibilities as an ICC Elite Panel Umpire and the possibility that these could reduce the opportunities for him to contribute to the BCB in the same capacity. His previous contract with the Board therefore concluded in April 2026," the board statement read.

Sharfuddoula made history in March 2024 when he became the first Bangladeshi umpire to earn a place on the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires, a distinction that substantially raised both his international profile and the volume of assignments he receives from the ICC.

What is Sharfuddoula's current arrangement with the BCB?

The BCB confirmed that Sharfuddoula remains available to officiate for the board on a case-by-case basis despite the contract conclusion. The board may call on him for bilateral international series and domestic First Class, List A and T20 competitions depending on his availability at any given time.

"It may also be noted that placing ICC Elite Panel Umpires under central contracts is not standard practice among Full Member countries, largely because of the difficulty of balancing their international officiating commitments with the scheduling requirements of national boards. The BCB however, may engage Sharfuddoula for bilateral international series as well as domestic First Class, List A and T20 competitions, subject to his availability. At the conclusion of his contract in April 2026, Sharfuddoula was appointed by the BCB to officiate in the T20I series against Australia in June 2026 under a similar arrangement," the statement added.

That appointment for the Australia T20I series in June 2026 illustrates how the working relationship between Sharfuddoula and the BCB continues in a flexible form. The board's position also reflects a wider reality across Full Member nations, where tying an Elite Panel umpire to a central contract is rarely practical given the demands of the ICC's international calendar.
