Bears offense falters at training camp, but there’s a silver lining

The Chicago Bears are one of the teams to watch during NFL training camp, as Ben Johnson and company come into the season with very high expectations on their shoulders. The Bears were one of the top teams in the NFL last season in Johnson’s first season as head coach, which was much more than they were expected to do.

Johnson immediately transformed the Bears’ offense upon his arrival, turning the running game into a dynamo and getting some of the best football out of Caleb Williams during his young career. If that continues, the Bears will once again be a force in the NFC.

However, the Chicago offense hasn’t had things all its own way during training camp against a defense that struggled mightily at times last season. On Tuesday, the Bears had their worst day yet on that side of the ball. Williams tossed a couple of interceptions and Luther Burden III suffered an injury scare, per Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic.

“The Chicago Bears’ starting offense today had two interceptions, a fumbled snap, back-to-back false starts in a two-minute situation, and it ended with receiver Luther Burden III on the ground after an incomplete pass, slow to get up,” Fishbain wrote.

Despite those struggles, there’s no reason to sound the alarm given how Chicago’s offense has looked during the rest of camp leading up to Tuesday.

“The good news? It’s Aug. 4; it’s been one of the better camps for a Bears offense, and Burden said he’s OK when he spoke to the media after practice,” Fishbain added.

The Bears traded away DJ Moore this offseason in a deal with the Buffalo Bills, and Burden is being looked at as one of the top breakout candidates to soak up some of that lost production. Around him, Rome Odunze and Colston Loveland could also be guys on the verge of a big year.

The Bears still have plenty of time to get things right on offense. However, they won’t want to have too many more days like Tuesday in the lead-up to the preseason.
