Yankees’ Anthony Volpe gets 100% real on facing Zack Wheeler in injury rehab game
Anthony Volpe began the season on the IL for the New York Yankees. Volpe is getting closer to a return for New York after needing shoulder surgery last October. The next step in the process was making a rehab start at the Double-A level.
Volpe got the start for the Somerset Patriots, the Double-A affiliate of the Yankees, against the Reading Fightin Phils. The pitcher on the mound was none other than Philadelphia Phillies star pitcher Zack Wheeler, also making a rehab start. After the game, Volpe spoke on facing Wheeler in his rehab start, according to SNY Yankees.
“He looked good, it was a great challenge,” Volpe said.
Volpe took two at-bats, going 0-2 with two strikeouts, with both at-bats being against Wheeler. He also handled one fielding chance, taking a grounder and throwing it to first base for the out. While the game was not eventful for the Yankees’ shortstop, it was another solid step in the rehab process, as he confirmed to the media, according to Brian Murphy of MLB.com.
“It’s a big milestone, a big checkpoint,” Volpe told the media after the game. “It felt good to get back out there.”
Jose Caballero has been the primary shortstop for the Yankees since Volpe went down. He has hit just .161 with a .203 on-base percentage and a .268 slugging percentage. He has one home run, six RBIs, and five runs scored, while also stealing six bases.
There is still no full timetable for the return of Volpe, but the Yankees are sure to be excited to have him back. Maybe as much as Volpe is excited to return to the Yankees.
