Unrivaled coach reveals how Dream’s Angel Reese has improved her offensive game

Angel Reese remains as divisive of a player as ever, but at just 24 years of age, there’s no denying that she has plenty of room to grow still as an individual and as a basketball player. Reese, in fact, has been making plenty of strides on offense for the Atlanta Dream amid a strong season in which they’ve already booked a place in the playoffs.

Reese is averaging a career-best 16.1 points per game this season in her first campaign in Atlanta, and she’s become a more aggressive force on the offensive end. And her former coach with the Chicago Sky, Teresa Weatherspoon, lauded her for the improvements she’s made as a scorer.

“She’s a coachable young lady. She wants to be great. She understands those little things that are so important. She’s a detailed athlete, knowing what she must do for her team to be successful. The great thing is, now, she’s finally understanding where that pass may go because the game is slowing down for her,” Weatherspoon said on NBA TV.

Reese, of course, has plenty of improvements left to make in her game, for as much as some pundits have noticed the strides she’s made on that end of the floor. Her increase in output has come mostly from an increase in attempts from the field, which has then led to worse scoring efficiency.

After going just 5-14 from the field and 6-8 from the foul line in a 101-83 loss for the Dream to the Portland Fire on Friday, Reese’s true shooting went down to 51.1 — which is around two points lower than her tally last year. Being an 18% shooter from deep for her career means that Reese may be best served excising that shot from her game.

At the end of the day, the Dream forward’s main strength lies in her elite rebounding, and her defense isn’t too shabby either. More offensive contributions could be good, but not at the expense of scoring efficiency and all the other little things she does on the court.
