Avalanche’s Cale Makar sends first message to fans after historic $163 million contract

The Colorado Avalanche made hockey history on Friday when they re-signed defenseman Cale Makar. Makar signed a historic $163 million contract with Colorado, making him the highest-paid player in NHL history. He is also the first player in NHL history to earn a salary of $20 million in a season.

It’s a landmark deal for Makar and the Avalanche this summer. Colorado keeps its franchise defenseman around for eight years, which could make him an Avalanche for life. They also paid a hefty price to do so, which could impact roster building down the line.

On Friday, Makar sent a message to Colorado fans after putting pen to paper.

“To the Avalanche fans, thank you for your continued support and for welcoming us to Colorado years ago. Colorado has truly become a second home to us, and we are so grateful to be here. I look forward to getting back on the ice with my teammates and continuing to work toward our goal of bringing the Stanley Cup back to the Mile High City,” the Avalanche superstar said, via NHL.com

Makar is one of the best defensemen in the NHL at this time. He has scored 90+ points twice in his career and has eclipsed the 75-point mark on four occasions. The Avalanche star has won the Norris Trophy as the best defenseman in the league on two occasions.

The Avalanche are making a massive investment in their star defenseman. But the reward could certainly outweigh the risk if the team continues to have success on the ice.
