Eagles’ Jalen Hurts gets real on constantly changing offensive system

Jalen Hurts has grown used to starting over. The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback is working with his sixth offensive coordinator in seven NFL seasons, and this time it is new play-caller Sean Mannion running the show. Rather than treat the latest overhaul as a burden, Hurts is leaning into it.

“Every year is its own year, and I’ve treated it that way,” Hurts said in an interview by NFL on CBS’ AJ Ross. “Especially as I’ve gotten older, because you have to embrace the change. I think working with Sean has been really good.”

Mannion’s arrival marks the most significant schematic shift of the Nick Sirianni era. A first-time play-caller out of the Sean McVay coaching tree, Mannion is installing a motion-heavy, play-action system built on wide-zone runs that will put Hurts under center far more often than in years past.

It is a clear departure from the offense Philadelphia ran during its recent Super Bowl run.

The change followed a disappointing 2025 season in which the passing game regressed and the offense lost its rhythm. Hurts, though, framed the reset as an opportunity rather than a setback, describing himself as being in “sponge mode” while soaking up Mannion’s system through training camp.

“I’m excited to see how things go in the season as we put things together,” Hurts said. He added that he has stayed locked in on the process, calling the constant turnover “some of the beauty of the NFL” because “it changes year to year.”

Hurts has navigated this cycle before. The list of coordinators he has learned under keeps growing, from Shane Steichen and Brian Johnson to Kellen Moore and Kevin Patullo, with several leaving for head coaching jobs elsewhere. Continuity has been the missing piece, and Hurts made clear he values building fluency in one system over the long haul.

The stakes are real. Philadelphia reshaped its roster this offseason, trading receiver A.J. Brown to New England and drafting rookie Makai Lemon to help fill the void alongside DeVonta Smith. With a new coordinator, a new scheme, and a retooled supporting cast, the Eagles are betting that Mannion’s system finally gives Hurts something that lasts.
