Even Louisiana’s Governor has issues with NCAA’s changing rules

It feels like every sport at the college level has gone through significant rule changes in recent years, as the NCAA is still seemingly navigating the NIL and transfer portal eras. Although the NIL has been in place since 2021, schools around the nation for all sports are still in the Wild West when it comes to managing players’ eligibility. On Friday, it was revealed that Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry is seemingly fed up with it all.

Reports indicate that Landry informed ESPN that college sports are a complete mess and he’s ready for the U.S. Senate to step in, according to Pete Thamel of ESPN. Landry claimed that President Donald Trump and former Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban were right to criticize the current state of the NCAA, as the rules have become confusing and jumbled.

“I’ve been saying for a year that college sports need to be fixed,” Landry said to ESPN. “President Trump and Saban were right. The rules keep changing, and at this point, no one even knows what the actual rules are. The U.S. Senate needs to step up and fix this. The U.S. Senate needs to quit politicking and start working!”

The latest drama in the NCAA came to fruition after the LSU Tigers attempted to sign two players who had previously declared for the 2026 NFL Draft. Although both players went undrafted, they did participate in training camps and were both eventually cut.

The Big Ten and SEC announced on the same day that players who have previously worked with professional teams in any sport are not allowed to return to any school within their conferences. Other conferences followed suit, while others are reportedly expected to come to a similar conclusion.

While the Louisiana Governor and many others hope for more clarity from the NCAA, college sports fans can look forward to the new football season. Week 0 kicks off on Saturday, August 29.
