Why Mitch Garver may leave Yankees before playing a game with MLB team

When the New York Yankees added Mitch Garver after the trade deadline in early August, fans had been wondering when the team would display some of his talents. While a move for Garver to the Yankees from the minor leagues never materialized, there is a chance that the catcher leaves the team without playing a game for them.

According to Gary Phillips of The New York Daily News, Garver “has exercised an assignment clause in his deal,” meaning he could look for major league opportunities around if possible.

“I’m told that catcher Mitch Garver, at Triple-A with the Yankees, has exercised an assignment clause in his deal. Today was his deadline to do so. That doesn’t mean he’ll automatically leave the org, but he can seek big league opportunities elsewhere,” Phillips wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Garver has been in the MLB since 2017, playing the first five seasons with the Minnesota Twins, then two years with the Texas Rangers, leading to his stint with the Seattle Mariners, starting in 2024, though he was released on Aug. 4. When initially picked up by the Yankees, manager Aaron Boone praised his experience.

“He’s got a ton of experience, and he’s a guy that’s had a lot of success in the league,” Boone said at the time, via MLB.com. “We’re trying to add to our depth and protection. We’ll get him into our system and see where we can help him, see what he has. You never know.”

At any rate, Garver wouldn’t log a single game for the Yankees, having been in the minor leagues, as it remains to be seen whether Garver stays with New York or goes elsewhere.
