Reds lose Ke’Bryan Hayes to injured list during Cubs series

The Cincinnati Reds have shown flashes of promise throughout the 2020s, but in the midst of what is trending to be a last-place campaign, it has become painfully obvious that this organization is far from solving the root of its problem. Although the front office has identified a few franchise pillars, it has mismanaged and misjudged talent at a worrying rate. Look no further than Ke’Bryan Hayes. The defensively elite third baseman was a poor hitter when he arrived in Cincy last summer, but he has tumbled even further in 2026. Injuries are only compounding his issues. He is landing on the shelf once again.

The Reds are placing Hayes on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to Aug. 27) due to a left groin strain, per the team, and are recalling infielder Edwin Arroyo from Triple-A Louisville. The 2021 second-round draft pick last played for Cincinnati on July 29 and batted .244 with a .286 on-base percentage, .282 slugging percentage and .568 OPS in 44 games. He will try to get comfortable at the dish and provide the team with serviceable offensive production.

But the Reds need Hayes to do the same. The two-time Gold Glove Award winner has five years remaining on his $70 million contract (club option in 2030), putting president of baseball operations Nick Krall in a tough spot moving forward. He is slashing .153/.213/.250/.463 with five home runs and eight RBIs in 211 plate appearances this season.

Hopefully, Ke’Bryan Hayes will get the chance to rejoin the club and improve those numbers before year’s end. He could really use some good news, and so could Reds fans.
