South Carolina addresses point guard need with crucial transfer

The South Carolina Gamecocks were dealt a major blow this offseason when point guard Maddy McDaniel announced her intentions to step away from the program and college basketball. McDaniel was in line to be the Gamecocks’ starting point guard next season, forcing them to pivot late in the process. But South Carolina was able to rebound quickly with the addition of Brooke Daniels out of the transfer portal, as per Talia Goodman of On3, at least for now.

Brooke Daniels had initially entered the transfer portal earlier this month amid court rulings that temporarily granted eligibility to multiple players from the class of 2022, and settled on South Carolina. While some of the rulings have been halted by higher courts, that hasn’t happened yet regarding Daniels. She also was not selected in the WNBA Draft and did not participate in training camp or the regular season, potentially helping her amid the SEC’s attempt to restrict players who had already been pros.

While nothing is set in stone, if Daniels’ eligibility holds up, she most likely has the inside track to start at point guard for South Carolina this upcoming season.

The fifth-year guard began her college basketball career at Oakland where she played from 2022-2024 before transferring to Michigan for what would have been her final two seasons of eligibility. This past year, she appeared in 35 games for the Wolverines, including 31 starts, at a little over 25 minutes per game.

She averaged 5.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.5 steals with splits of 48 percent shooting from the field and 69 percent shooting from the free-throw line. She was also named to the All-Big Ten Defensive Team this past season.
