Hawks fans take note as Buddy Hield shines in FIBA World Cup Qualifiers

The men’s FIBA World Cup Qualifiers got underway this week with Atlanta Hawks guard Buddy Hield among the several NBA players participating with their home countries. Hield was initially acquired by the Hawks as part of the Jonathan Kuminga trade at the deadline last season, although he was not featured prominently in the team’s rotation.

But suiting up for the Bahamas, Buddy Hield certainly made Hawks fans take notice with a flamethrower of a performance against Uruguay in a win. He finished with 28 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals while shooting 8-of-16 from the field and 6-of-11 from the 3-point line.

Following the trade, Hield appeared in only seven games for the Hawks at just a little over seven minutes per game. He averaged 5.1 points and 1.1 rebounds with splits of 48.1 percent shooting from the field, 41.2 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 100 percent shooting from the free-throw line.

During the Hawks’ opening round playoff series loss to the New York Knicks, he saw action in only two games at a little over six minutes per. Despite not being featured in the team’s rotation, the Hawks still opted to fully guarantee Hield’s contract for the upcoming season as it was only partially guaranteed. He holds a team option for the 2027-28 season before potentially hitting unrestricted free agency.

The No. 6 overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, Hield will be entering his 11th season in the league. In addition to the Warriors and Hawks, he’s also had stints with the New Orleans Pelicans, Sacramento Kings, Indiana Pacers and Philadelphia 76ers.
