3 things to watch for on World Cup 2026 Day 17

Here are three things to watch for and fun facts to amaze and entertain your friends with on Day 17 of the 2026 World Cup.

Who will come out in second in Group J?

We know that Lionel Messi and Argentina are coming out of Group J as the first-place squad. What we don;t know is if Austria can muster the strength to take a point or three off of the defending champions. If not, they are likely going home as Algeria should beat Jordan to move into second.

Austria has to hope that Lionel Scolari rests his starters, especially Messi, for their potential date with Cabo Verde in the Round of 32. Whether it is Austria or Algeria, though, they may only have one game left in them as their most likely Round of 32 opponent is Spain.

Portugal and Colombia in massive Group K clash

Colombia and Portugal are both likely through to the Knockout stage, and Colombia might rest their starters here, as they are 100% moving on. If they do lay, though, this will be an incredible test of two teams that have a real chance to win it all, and two teams that have grown and improved over the course of their first two matches.

Additionally, if Cristiano Ronaldo plays, it is just another entry in the saga that is the superstar’s 2026 World Cup. And what may be even more fascinating is if he doesn’t play, and Portugal looks better heading into the next rounds.

Can England rebound to take Group L?

England did not look good last time out as Ghana ground them into submission. Now, they face the worst team in the group in Panama, but the Central American squad is no pushover. They are equally as tough defensively as Ghana was, so Thomas Tuchel will have to figure out a way to create chances when the other side is parking the bus.

Ghana vs. Croatia will be incredibly fun with serious stakes. A win or draw will likely see both go through, but if Ghana wins, Croatia is probably out of the 2026 World Cup.
