Buccaneers tackle Luke Goedeke sounds off on role in multiple practice fights vs. Jets

Joint practices during NFL Training camp can get heated. As the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Jets held joint practices on Tuesday, ahead of a preseason game this week, things got heated. Multiple fights broke out between the Bucs and Jets.

Now, the man who was in the middle of two of them, Buccaneers guard Luke Goedeke, has broken his silence about the fights, per Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports.

“I mean, obviously, not the greatest decision by me. With that being said, I’m always going to defend my players, defend myself for that matter. I’m not going to get punked and not do anything about it, especially on a football field,” Goedeke said. “Just kind of comes with the game, I guess, especially in joint practices. You see stuff like this all the time. Obviously, try to limit it and make sure it doesn’t happen in a game, obviously.”

The first scuffle of the day came between Goedeke and Jets rookie David Bailey. Goedeke defeated Bailey in a one-on-one drill, and Bailey slapped his opponent’s helmet, leading to the two needing to be separated. Later, during the Bucs’ offensive session against the Jets defense, another scuffle broke out, resulting in Goedeke launching a helmet 20 yards downfield.

“Well, he [Bailey] called me out in one-on-ones and wanted to go against me and lost. Tried shoving me after that, then 52 [Kingsley Enagbare], I believe, came from the side and just cheap-shotted me, so that didn’t start practice warm and fuzzy, that’s for sure,” Goedeke continued.

The two teams are set for another joint practice on Wednesday, before a preseason game between the two on Friday night.
