Stephen Jones’ favorite Caleb Downs Alabama story says it all about Cowboys rookie

It looks promising for Caleb Downs and the Dallas Cowboys as he hears rookie of the year whispers. And Downs already shut down CeeDee Lamb in camp. Also, Stephen Jones’ favorite story about Alabama says it all for the rookie.

Jones said he loves the story of Downs spending the spring semester with the Alabama football team, according to ESPN.

“He was there for the bowl game,” Jones said. “He had his iPad and was acting and studying like he was going to play. And they were like, ‘Caleb, you can’t play in the game,’ but he’s studying his iPad like he’s got to know every last little detail of the game plan. And he knew he wasn’t going to hit the field.”

The Cowboys didn’t expect Downs to be available. They thought the Giants would take him at No. 10. Instead, the Giants grabbed OT Francis Mauigoa. The Cowboys then traded up one spot to No. 11 to secure Downs.

And head coach Brian Schottenheimer said the team is still enjoying the selection.

“He’s doing great,” Schottenheimer said. “For a rookie, so instinctive, doesn’t repeat mistakes. When you can play right away as a freshman at Alabama for Nick Saban, you’ve got some intelligence about you.”

Also, Downs and others have been helping first-year defensive coordinator Christian Parker. Schottenheimer said Parker is doing just fine in the role.

“Really good,” Schottenheimer said of Parker. “Great conviction, knows exactly what he wants, moves the pieces around, players love him. There’s a line of players waiting outside his door to talk to him, because they know how smart he is. He’s awesome.”

Of course, it helps to have standout players like Downs. The Cowboys figure to have a much better defense than the one they put on the field in 2025. And if their offense lives up to expectations, a good defense means a chance to make real playoff noise.
