Dwayne Johnson ‘exploring’ drastic career change after Moana box office flop

After his last project, the live-action Moana movie, flopped at the box office, a career change could be in the cards for WWE legend and actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

During an interview with Rolling Stone (via Sports Illustrated), The Rock revealed that he’s “exploring” the possibility of becoming a music star. What kind of music, you may ask? He is looking into “old-school soul genre, with some country flavor.” He named artists like Sam Cooke and Merle Haggard as points of inspiration.

“I’m exploring that now,” he told the outlet. “As you roll along in life, I’ve been real fortunate to be part of some really cool projects, and love it. But music has always been such an anchor for me, and very specifically in genres that I love, like country music, traditional country music. And we’re exploring that now.”

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s musical past

Even during his WWE career, Johnson gave fans teases of his musical prowess, occasionally performing concerts with lyrics aimed at his foes.

He also appeared in the music video for Wyclef Jean’s song “It Doesn’t Matter,” and recorded “Pie” with Slick Rick for WWF: The Music, Vol. 5.

Of course, he also sang in the Moana movies, which are musicals. He returned to play Maui in the live-action remake of the first Moana movie.

Unfortunately, it was not a hit. To date, the live-action Moana movie has only grossed $281.2 million worldwide. For reference, the first two animated flicks made $643.5 million and $1 billion, respectively.

Later in the year, Johnson will appear in another franchise movie, Jumanji: Open World, which he also produced. He has previously appeared in two other entries in the series, which grossed over $962 million and $801 million, respectively. We’ll see if the third movie is able to get Johnson’s career back on track.
