3 things to watch for on World Cup 2026 Day 16

Here are three things to watch for and fun facts to amaze and entertain your friends with on Day 15 of the 2026 World Cup.

Can Belgium rally in Group G?

Turkiye getting eliminated and South Korea being on the bubble are both a little bit of a surprise, but we haven’t had a giant go down yet. Belgium could be that Goliath as they currently sit in third place in Group G with just two points. That means they need a win to move on to the Knockout Stage.

A win over New Zealand and a little help from Egypt should put Belgium in second place in its group. If that’s the case, they’d get Australia in the Round of 32, which should see the Red Devils on to the Round of 16, despite the lackluster start to the 2026 World Cup.

Will Cabo Verde stun the world in Group H?

Cabo Verde (pop. ~615,000) is playing in a city with 5x its population against a country in Saudi Arabia with ~35 million more people. To say the small island off the coast of Africa is an underdog is an understatement. Still, Cabo Verde is currently in third and on the bubble for moving on.

If Cabo Verde can win or draw with Saudi Arabia and Spain takes care of business and beats Uruguay, then the breakout star of the 2026 World Cup, 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha, and the Blue Sharks will move on to the Knockout Stage.

A France-Norway showdown in Group I

Someone will finish first. Someone will finish second. Senegal and Iraq are probably out, no matter what, blah, blah, blah. Now we can get to the Main Event of the Group Stage, France vs. Norway. The favorites vs. the favorite dark horses. Kylian Mbappe vs. Erling Haaland.

This is a Knockout Stage-level showdown between two of the best teams in World Cup 2026 and two of the best players and goal-scorers in the world. This is what the World Cup is all about, and the fact that we are getting a matchup of this caliber before the Round of 32 even begins is a real treat.
