Here are three things to watch for and fun facts to amaze and entertain your friends with on Day 9 of the 2026 World Cup.

Will the USA prove they’re for real against Australia?

When the USA takes on Australia for the first-place spot in Group D, there is more on the line than just Round of 32 seedings. After dismantling Paraguay, the USMNT will be out to show that it is a quarterfinal or even a semifinal contender in the 2026 World Cup.

They may have to do so without Christian Pulisic, but they are actually equipped to do that and be OK, which seemed unthinkable just a few years ago. This USMNT is stacked, and they finally have a manager bringing modern tactics to the team, which allows them to compete on a higher level and do so with or without their biggest star.

The USA has the talent advantage over Australia, but the Socceroos are tough and disciplined. Still, with Mauricio Pochettino pulling the strings, there is no reason his squad shouldn’t once again win by a margin.

The Tartan Army (re)invades Boston

One of the most fun stories of the World Cup 2026 so far is the Scotland fan support. Thousands of men in kilts and Scots of all stripes rocking either red or blue jerseys have invaded New England. They have overwhelmed (in the friendliest possible way) cities from Boston to Providence and have literally drunk almost all the beer in Boston.

The Tartan Army’s team looked great on the pitch, too, against Haiti, but the step-up in class is coming. They get Morocco now and Brazil next, which will go a long way toward deciding whether Scotland is a real story or just a fun distraction at this World Cup.

Who will look better in their second match, Brazil or Morocco?

The Brazil-Morocco match from matchday 1 was uninspiring at best. The six-time World Cup winners and the 2022 World Cup semifinalists played to a 1-1 draw, where neither side looked like a group poised to go far in this tournament. That’s the beauty of the World Cup, though. These teams have two more matches to round into shape, and plenty of teams (Argentina 2022, Spain 2010) have done even worse and lost their first match before going on to win it all.

Both these squads have the talent and the pedigree to win it all. Watching to see which team looks more like a contender in theri second match will be interesting. It wouldn’t be a major surprise if both looked much better, which would put the rest of the tournament on notice.
