MLB rumors: Rangers’ trade deadline update leaves door open for Corey Seager deal
Before the weekend, the Texas Rangers were leading the American League West and had the look of a potential buyer (albeit a minor one) ahead of the 2026 MLB trade deadline. Now, they trail the Houston Astros by two and a half games and are currently on the wrong side of the AL playoff picture. Needless to say, it was a rough three days in Space City.
Given the franchise’s abrupt change in circumstances, it appears president of baseball operations Chris Young could be open to shipping out some of the organization’s most coveted players. “The Rangers are taking calls from teams about any player on their roster, and, according to a source, are open to discussing anyone in the right deal,” MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reported on X. “A would-be buyer appears to be heading towards a potential day of selling.”
Pitchers Nathan Eovaldi, MacKenzie Gore and Jacob Latz are all drawing interest hours before Monday’s 6 p.m. ET deadline, but the words “any player on the roster” suggest that Corey Seager might also be available. The two-time World Series MVP could be the perfect addition for a playoff-destined ballclub that is looking for an edge in October.
Seager is batting a paltry .188 with a .672 OPS and has missed half the season amid more injury problems, but if the 32-year-old shortstop can stay healthy for an extended period of time, perhaps he can return to producing worthwhile numbers at the plate. There is a massive obstacle that could prevent any potential deal from getting done, however.
Seager is due to collect more than $160 million through the 2031 campaign, so the Rangers (55-57) may have to eat a chunk of his contract if they wish to move him. Until further notice, the three-time Silver Slugger and five-time All-Star remains in Texas.
He will try to push through all the MLB trade deadline talk and prepare himself for a home matchup versus the San Francisco Giants (47-65). First pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.
