Jahmyr Gibbs gives cryptic answer on missing Lions practice amid contract talks

With training camp underway, all eyes are on Jahmyr Gibbs, as he hasn’t been practicing with the Detroit Lions lately. While there is speculation that the 24-year-0ld running back is holding in for a new contract, Gibbs’ latest comments may suggest otherwise.

Reporters asked the Lions star when he plans to return to practice. Gibbs provided a rather cryptic answer, suggesting that time will reveal the answer to that question, according to Colton Pouncy of The Athletic. He also claimed that the contract negotiations are not the reason why he’s missing practices, which alludes to a possible injury situation.

“Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs isn’t practicing as he seeks a contract extension, but today, he spoke to reporters briefly coming off the field,” Pouncy wrote. “When asked when he plans to practice again, Gibbs said, ‘Only time will tell.’ When asked if he needs a new contract to return to practice, Gibbs said, ‘Nah, it’s not about that,’ and did not elaborate.

“Dan Campbell said Gibbs is dealing with a minor back issue, so his absence could also be tied to that,” Pouncy suggested. “But for now, the wait continues.”

The three-time Pro Bowler ended last season as one of the league’s most prolific rushers, finishing with 1,233 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground. He also added 616 receiving yards (career-high) and another five scores through the air (career-high) off of 77 receptions (career-high).

Although Jahmyr Gibbs is in contract talks with the Lions, Detroit did pick up his fifth-year option. So, Gibbs is still under contract through the 2027-28 campaign. However, he is eligible for an extension and appears to be seeking a long-term deal before the start of the 2026-27 season.
