NBA rumors: Multiple writers craft Stephen Curry trade hypotheticals for Celtics that won’t happen

The Boston Celtics have had a disastrous offseason, headlined by the shocking trade of Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Paul George and draft picks. While fans have lambasted executive Brad Stevens for the consequential deal, there are still theoretical avenues for the Celtics to get better over the near and long-term future.

Recently, John Karalis of Sports Illustrated floated the idea of a shocking trade that would see Boston acquire superstar point guard Stephen Curry from the Golden State Warriors.

“My trade package is going to be George, the picks acquired from Philadelphia, and Sam Hauser for Curry,” wrote Karalis.

Karalis also noted that “Two things have to happen for this trade to work. They’d have to wait until September 6 to make the trade because Paul George’s salary can’t be aggregated with anyone else’s for 60 days. And they’d have to be pretty confident that Baylor Scheierman, Hugo Gonzalez, or Jordan Walsh … and most likely two of the three … would be ready to fill a major role on the wing.”

It’s unclear how ready Scheierman, Gonzalez, or Walsh are for extended minutes in the rotation after each seeing some spot minutes last year during Boston’s surprising 2025-26 regular season.

Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report also proposed a similar trade that would see the Celtics land Curry in exchange for George and future assets.

At this point, the Warriors have given no indication that they are planning to move on from Curry at any point during his Hall of Fame career, even as Golden State stares down another likely year of mediocrity this upcoming season, bringing back the exact same roster that won 37 games last year.

Still, this is the point in the offseason when wild hypotheticals start getting tossed around.
