Jordan Henderson tipped to emulate Premier League legend at Chelsea as surprise transfer confirmed

Chelsea have completed the signing of Jordan Henderson on a two-year contract.

The England midfielder has joined the Blues on a free transfer, just days after he had his contract mutually cancelled by Brentford.

Henderson spent a year with the Bees, having joined the club following his exit from Ajax in the 2025 summer transfer window.

The 36-year-old impressed on his shock return to the Premier League, making 32 league appearances last term for Keith Andrews’ side.

His performances saw him continue to be selected for England under Thomas Tuchel, and was part of his World Cup squad in North America this summer.

However, Henderson made just one appearance for the Three Lions, with his tournament ending early after surgery on a broken radius, suffering the injury while celebrating England’s last 16 win over Mexico.

‘I couldn’t turn it down’

“Given the size of the club, the manager, who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down,” Henderson told Chelsea’s in-house media.

“I was also so impressed with how much the ownership want Chelsea to be successful and move in the right direction.

“For me, it’s about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I’m very excited to get going.”

Wealth of experience

Now, Henderson adds some much-needed experience to a Chelsea side that struggled for leaders last term.

This is clearly an area the Blues are keen to bolster, with 35-year-old Danny Welbeck also signing, the striker arriving from Brighton over the weekend.

Henderson’s year at Brentford came after spells with Ajax and Saudi club Al Ettifaq, which followed his Liverpool exit in 2023.

During his time at Anfield, he won eight major trophies including the Champions League, Premier League and Club World Cup – captaining the Reds to all three successes.

New Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso will be hoping Henderson can instil a winning mentality in his team, whose mentality and maturity came under question at times last term.

The west Londoners had ten dismissals in the 2025/26 season, eight of which came in the Premier League – more than any other side.

Henderson’s arrival also follows Chelsea’s British-record signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117million.

Xabi Alonso’s side have also signed defender Marco Palestra from Atalanta already this summer.

‘Good senior pros’

Chelsea’s decision to sign Henderson has divided opinion, but ex-Blues striker Tony Cascarino hailed it as shrewd business.

Speaking on talkSPORT’s Weekend Sports Breakfast, Cascarino insisted both Henderson and Welbeck will help to drive standards and leadership at Stamford Bridge.

He said: “You sign good senior pros. You find out their mentality. There’s no doubt in my mind. 

“I don’t know Danny Welbeck, I’m pretty confident that he is a great lad. And he’ll be a great asset to Chelsea.

“He’s sorely needed at that football club. Because they’ve lacked experience on the pitch for a number of seasons now, and I think they’ve paid a heavy price. And also, say, they lacked experience when Liam Rosenior took the job – they went for a potential young manager.

“I think it’s all about the mentality. I always think of Gary McAllister when he went to Liverpool – those type of players. And I think of Teddy Sheringham when he went to Manchester United.

“Yes, they’re big clubs. But the mentality of having those senior pros come in, not to run a dressing room, to have a respect in the dressing room for everything that might be wrong.”

On the experience Henderson will provide, Cascarino added: “I think Chelsea have really lost that in their dressing room by ignoring proven players.”
