Tyler Perry helps HBCU alumna pay for Harvard

Tyler Perry’s latest act of generosity has helped an HBCU alumna continue her education in the Ivy League. Janay DuBerry, a graduate of Tuskegee University who is now attending the Harvard Graduate School of Education, revealed on Instagram that Perry covered the remaining cost of her education after financial aid still left her with a significant funding gap.

DuBerry shared that she wasn’t sure how she would afford Harvard despite being accepted and receiving substantial financial assistance from the university.

“Thank you @tylerperry. It has been a long journey.

After years of writing, building, networking, and earning my degree at Tuskegee University, I was accepted into Harvard. Harvard gave me generous financial aid, but I still faced a significant financial gap and did not know how I would make this dream a reality.

But God made a way.

Thank you, Tyler Perry, for hearing my story, believing in my gifts as a writer and educator, and covering the remaining cost of my Harvard education.

Your generosity has opened the door for me to continue my education, strengthen my voice as a writer and educator, and move closer to the forthcoming books and educational work I have been building.

You are a true light in the Black community. I love you, and I am overwhelmed, humbled, and grateful beyond words.

Thank you for investing in my purpose and helping make this dream a reality.”

DuBerry later shared another post expressing her appreciation for Perry’s support as she prepares for her next chapter.

Perry has long been known for using his wealth to support individuals and communities in need. Among his recent philanthropic efforts, Perry paid for the funeral of 18-year-old Nolan Wells. He also matched Rev. Al Sharpton’s $50,000 contribution to help authorities determine the circumstances surrounding Wells’ death.

In addition, Perry made a major donation to Perfecting Church, led by Bishop Marvin Winans, contributed $2.75 million to help low-income senior homeowners in Atlanta remain in their homes, and donated $1.5 million to organizations providing food and resources during the 2025 SNAP benefit freeze.
