Wolves will be playing their first match in the Championship since their promotion in 2018 following their relegation last season after eight consecutive years in the Premier League.

The West Midlands club return to second tier action with a season-opening match against Blackburn, and will start the campaign as the second favourites to earn promotion back into the top flight at the first time of asking.

Friday night will also mark the first league match for the team under the management of new boss Cesar Peixoto, the 46-year-old who spent last season managing Gil Vicente in his native Portugal.

Peixoto’s side haven’t been too badly affected by the transfer window over the summer, midfielder Joao Gomes the only notable departure, while adding the ability and experience of both Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez to aid their promotion push.

Wolves had a mostly successful pre-season campaign, losing only one of their five friendlies, against Real Sociedad, while getting the better of the likes of Maidenhead and Doncaster and, most recently, Racing Santander.

The club also made a strong start to their competitive campaign with a 3-0 win over Port Vale in the first round of the Carabao Cup last weekend.

Blackburn head to the West Midlands for Friday night’s Championship curtain raiser for the start of their ninth consecutive season in the second tier following their promotion from League One in 2018.

Rovers’ manager for that promotion winning season was Tony Mowbray, who is now back in charge of the club for his second spell at Ewood Park, with Friday’s match marking his first league game managing the club since his first spell ended four years ago.

The Lancashire side will be looking to improve on their 20th placed finish from last season, having finished in the top eight in three of the previous four campaigns.

Only two new faces have come through the arrival with highly rated winger Jayden Fevrier joining from Stockport, as well as experienced midfielder Sam Morsy, while fellow middle of the park player Moussa Baradji made his loan move from Switzerland permanent.

Blackburn survived a scare in their Carabao Cup first round tie last weekend, scoring twice in the final 10 minutes of the match to overturn a 1-0 deficit against League One side Burton.

Wolves are unbeaten in their last nine matches against Blackburn, but haven’t played in the league since 2017, though Friday’s hosts did knock Blackburn out of the FA Cup back in February 2025. The last three league meetings have all ended as draws.
