Wild forward Marcus Johansson signs in Sweden after 16 years in NHL

The Minnesota Wild season came to an end in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, as they fell to the Colorado Avalanche. Now, many players have to make decisions about their future. Mats Zuccarello recently declared he was not going to retire.

Now, another player from the Wild has decided not to retire, but his future is not with the team, according to Michael Russo of The Athletic.

“Hearing [Minnesota Wild] pending unrestricted free agent Marcus Johansson, coming off a real solid season, has signed a contract to return to Sweden and play back with Farjestad,” Russo posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Marcus Johansson was the 24th overall selection of the 2009 NHL Draft by the Washington Capitals. He would break into the NHL with the Capitals in 2010-11, and stay with them through the 2016-17 season. He then spent time with the New Jersey Devils, Boston Bruins. Buffalo Sabres, Wild, and Seattle Kraken before returning to Washington.

His second stint with the Caps ended during the 2022-23 campaign, when he was traded back to the Minnesota Wild. He had a resurgent season in 2025-26, scoring 15 goals and adding 34 assists. That gave him 49 points, the most he has had in a single season since 2016-17 during his first stint with the Capitals. It was also the second most of his NHL career.

He will now return to Sweden, where he played before joining the NHL. Johansson played for Farjestad in their youth system before joining the top club in 2008-09. He played 87 games in total with the team, scoring 15 goals with 15 assists.
