NBA rumors: Where Raptors’ Kawhi Leonard trade stands after Clippers punishment

With the penalties announced for Kawhi Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers regarding an investigation that found the franchise violating salary cap circumvention rules, the sports world is wondering how that impacts one specific move. As rumors surround Leonard and everything surrounding the punishment toward the Clippers, the star was traded to the Toronto Raptors this offseason, as this NBA insider answers how recent events impact the deal.

Speaking on Thursday’s edition of “Clutch Scoops” with Tomer Azarly, ClutchPoints’ NBA insider Brett Siegel said that he was informed that the trade “is still expected to go through and go through in full.”

“Talking about the Kawhi Leonard trade because you brought that up to the Toronto Raptors. We heard from a source this morning that it is still expected to go through and go through in full,” Siegel said. “They don’t expect any ramifications or any changes to the draft picks that are going to the Clippers.”

Looking at the original trade made on June 30, Toronto would trade Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, a 2031 unprotected first-round pick, a 2033 unprotected first-round pick, a 2027 first-round pick swap, and two second-round picks.

While that won’t be impacted, the Clippers would be stripped of five first-round picks in the years 2029, 2030, 2031, 2032, and 2033, via Siegel, to go along with owner Steve Ballmer being fined $30 million and suspended for a year, among other punishments.

Leonard is reported to pay $700,000 in “restitution for improper benefits by the Clippers for his uncle and former business rep, Dennis Robertson,” per Shams Charania. At any rate, while the impacts of the news story will be felt for a long time, it appears it won’t alter the trade made with the Raptors and Leonard.
