Why Yankees’ Cam Schlittler isn’t worried about stats despite dominant 2026 campaign
The New York Yankees are atop the AL East and having a good time on the diamond this season. One major reason for this is the breakout of starting pitcher Cam Schlittler. He entered Friday’s start against the Cincinnati Reds boasting a sparkling 1.71 ERA, which leads the American League. His 109 strikeouts entering Friday were just one off Dylan Cease for the AL lead, as well.
Schlittler once again proved why he is an early favorite for the AL Cy Young award when he took on the Reds. He pitched six innings, allowing four hits and zero runs. In those six innings, he struck out a career high 13 batters. The Yankees went on to win 5-0 over the Reds at Yankee Stadium in The Bronx, New York.
The Yankees star has the Bombers in a position to make some real noise in the postseason if this continues. However, his individual accolades are the furthest thing from his mind at this time.
“You don’t really notice those things. Obviously, the goal is to win a championship, so the stastics don’t really matter,” he told reporters during his postgame availability, via SNY Yankees.
The Yankees have been on a roll as of late, winning nine of their last 11 games, including Friday’s victory over Cincinnati. New York provided Schlittler with the run support he needed to lead the team to a win. Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Ben Rice homered in the bottom of the second to help lead the way at the plate.
New York and Cincinnati will play the second leg of this three-game series on Saturday before concluding it on Sunday.
