Ken Rosenthal praising Red Sox’s Craig Breslow for not ‘prospect hugging’

The Boston Red Sox made some big moves before the Major League Baseball trade deadline passed on Monday. That includes bringing in former Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman. MLB insider Ken Rosenthal is giving Boston props for not being afraid to part ways with prospects, in order to build a winning team right now.

“Give (Red Sox executive Craig) Breslow this much: He avoided the prospect hugging that pervades the industry, trading three of the Red Sox’s best. Fans who gush over the next big thing too often forget that many young hotshots turn out to be something less,” Rosenthal wrote for The Athletic. “The Red Sox have experienced one flameout after another in recent years, from Brayan Bello to Triston Casas, Kristian Campbell to Marcelo Mayer. On Monday, they sent Mayer to the San Francisco Giants for reliever Erik Miller.”

Red Sox executive Breslow gave insight into what his team was trying to do, before the deadline passed on Monday.

“At this time of year when you are trying to improve your team, there are not deals that are comfortable, you don’t draw a line and say, this is this is as far as we’ll go,” Breslow said. “And, there’s a bit of, like, a moving target. You try to remain as disciplined as you can, but I think you have to constantly zoom out to remind yourself that, like, what you’re trying to do is improve your major-league team in this season.”

Rosenthal also believes Rutschman could be a strong addition to this team.

“A cerebral type, Rutschman shouldn’t have a problem. But for a staff currently humming along with the third-best ERA in the majors, there is danger in disruption,” Rosenthal wrote.

Boston is one of the hottest teams in MLB, in recent months. The Red Sox went on a 15-game win streak this summer, to push back in the American League East standings.

The Red Sox are currently 60-51 on the campaign.
